Over the last six months or so, we’ve been talking to a lot of people about money. Specifically, why conversations about money can become so awkward, so quickly.

We spoke to a group of male flatmates in East Auckland who have finally got their bill-sharing sorted (it took two years of trying), and the way they described their bill situation was ‘a living nightmare’. Another billpayer in the Central City is still owed $600 for a power bill from 18 months ago. And a young woman from Mt Eden told us if they didn’t have a flat meeting to discuss bills every week, ‘the whole place would fall over’.
